Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) describes how Perplexity Chat Exporter (“the Extension,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use our browser extension. The Extension is provided free of charge and enables users to export their Perplexity AI conversation history to Markdown files stored locally on their device.

By installing or using the Extension, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Policy. If you do not agree with its terms, please do not use the Extension.

1. Summary of Practices

The Extension operates according to the following principles:

  • All data processing occurs locally within your web browser.
  • The Extension does not collect, store, or transmit user data to the developer or to any third-party server operated by the developer.
  • The Extension does not require users to create an account with the developer.
  • The Extension accesses conversation data only through your existing authenticated session with Perplexity AI’s website.

2. Information Accessed

When you use the Extension while visiting https://www.perplexity.ai, the Extension may access the following information:

  • Conversation thread content, including titles, messages, citations, and associated metadata;
  • Authentication session status, for the purpose of verifying that you are signed in to Perplexity AI.

Conversation data is accessed when you initiate an export or Select Threads action. Session status is checked when you open the popup. The Extension retrieves this data from Perplexity AI’s website using the session cookies maintained by your browser in the ordinary course of visiting that site.

3. Use of Information

Upon your request, the Extension performs the following operations:

  1. Retrieves conversation data from Perplexity AI’s application programming interface while you are on the Perplexity AI website;
  2. Converts the retrieved data to Markdown format within your browser;
  3. Saves the resulting file to your device’s local Downloads directory.

The Extension does not:

  • Transmit conversation content to external servers operated by the developer;
  • Store Perplexity AI credentials or session tokens in browser extension storage;
  • Monitor or record browsing activity outside of the Perplexity AI domain;
  • Employ analytics, advertising, or telemetry mechanisms.

4. Local Storage Used by the Extension

The Extension may save limited metadata locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local. It does not store full conversation message content in extension storage. Message bodies are held in memory only during conversion and are written to your Downloads directory.

4.1 Bulk-export checkpoint. When you use Export All Threads or export a selected set of threads, the Extension may save export job metadata so a large export can resume if interrupted or paused. This checkpoint may include:

  • Thread identifiers (UUIDs), titles, slugs, and URLs from the thread list snapshot taken when the export started;
  • Export progress counters and the next index to resume from;
  • A list of successfully completed thread IDs (to avoid duplicate downloads on resume).

This checkpoint remains on your device only. It is removed when the export completes, when you discard saved progress, or when you uninstall the Extension. It is retained if you pause or if the export is interrupted, so you may use Resume Previous Export.

4.2 Select Threads list cache. When you use Select Threads to Export, the Extension may temporarily save the thread list index (UUIDs, titles, slugs, and related list metadata) plus your search text and checkbox selections. This allows the picker to reopen after you close the popup and allows list indexing to finish in the background while a Perplexity tab remains open.

This cache remains on your device only. It is removed when you leave the picker (Back), start an export from the picker, cancel indexing, or uninstall the Extension. It is refreshed when you use Refresh list.

4.3 Failed Sessions Report

The Extension saves a local report of chat exports that return an error. It contains chat IDs where available, titles, Perplexity chat links, fixed failure explanations, and timestamps. Message bodies, raw API error responses, and credentials are not included.

The report remains available after a bulk export completes or the popup closes. A new single or bulk export resets it; Clear list removes its entries, and uninstall removes all extension storage. Resuming preserves failures. Resuming an older checkpoint can reconstruct failed chat metadata if another export replaced the report. Thread-list errors do not create failed-chat entries.

5. Authentication

The Extension does not request your Perplexity AI account credentials and does not persist authentication information. The Extension relies upon your browser’s existing session with Perplexity AI through same-origin requests (credentials: include). You must maintain an active Perplexity AI session in the same browser profile in order to use the export functionality.

6. Browser Permissions

The Extension requests the following browser permissions:

host_permissions: https://www.perplexity.ai/* To execute a content script on Perplexity AI web pages and to communicate with Perplexity AI’s application programming interface using your existing browser session.
storage To save local bulk-export progress, a temporary Select Threads list cache, and the latest Failed Sessions report (chat metadata and fixed failure explanations). No conversation bodies or credentials are stored.

The Extension does not request cookies, downloads, or broad host permissions such as <all_urls>.

7. Third-Party Services

7.1 Perplexity AI. The Extension communicates exclusively with www.perplexity.ai for the purpose of retrieving user-initiated export data. Your use of Perplexity AI’s services is subject to Perplexity AI’s own terms of service and privacy policy.

7.2 Buy Me a Coffee. The Extension’s user interface includes an optional hyperlink to a third-party support platform (buymeacoffee.com). No information is transmitted to that platform unless you independently choose to navigate to it.

8. Data Retention

Exported Markdown files remain on your device in your Downloads directory under your control.

Bulk-export checkpoint metadata, the Select Threads list cache, and the Failed Sessions report are retained locally only until cleared as described in Section 4, or until you uninstall the Extension. The developer does not receive or retain any of this data.

9. Children’s Privacy

The Extension is not directed to individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

10. Amendments to This Policy

We reserve the right to revise this Policy at any time to reflect changes in the Extension’s functionality or applicable requirements. The Effective Date at the top of this document indicates the date of the most recent revision. Continued use of the Extension following any amendment constitutes acceptance of the revised Policy.
